Discipleship: A Four-Session Guide for New Believers
How to lead
Discipleship begins with Christ reflected in the way we live. Because He dwells in us and we belong to His body, His love, patience, integrity and compassion should shape our everyday actions. Our lives can awaken curiosity before we ever speak about our faith. As people see His character in us, opportunities arise to share the hope we have and help them grow in Christ.
Read Matthew 5:16, Galatians 5:22–23 and 1 Peter 3:15. Our conduct should point people toward the Father. The Holy Spirit forms Christlike character in us, and when people ask about our hope, we explain it with gentleness and respect. Everyday witness opens the door to the intentional teaching, fellowship and care through which disciples grow.
Throughout these four sessions, practice what you learn in ordinary relationships. Choose one action each day that expresses Christ's love: listen patiently, keep your word, forgive, serve or show compassion. Reflect together: What did this reveal about Christ? If someone asks about your hope, how could you answer simply and kindly?
Meet weekly for 45–60 minutes. Read aloud, invite questions, explain context, and agree on one practice. Encourage belonging in a local church and continued mentoring after these sessions.
Session 1 — Following Jesus
Read Mark 1:14–20 and Ephesians 2:8–10. Explore repentance, faith, grace, and following Christ. Ask what the learner understands about Jesus and where help is needed. Practice: read a Gospel paragraph daily and record questions.
Session 2 — Scripture and prayer
Read 2 Timothy 3:14–17 and Matthew 6:9–13. Explore Scripture’s formative role and Jesus’ pattern of prayer. Ask what the passages reveal about God. Practice: ten minutes of daily Scripture reading and prayer.
Session 3 — Belonging and service
Read Acts 2:42–47 and 1 Corinthians 12:12–27. Explore teaching, fellowship, generosity, and different gifts. Ask what contribution the learner can make and what help is needed. Practice: join local fellowship, offer one act of service, and discuss baptism with church leaders.
Session 4 — Love in action
Read John 13:34–35 and Galatians 5:22–23. Explore Christlike love and the Spirit’s fruit. Ask which relationship needs patient action. Practice: plan one act of reconciliation, encouragement, or service.
