Read before outlining

Read the entire passage and its surrounding chapter. Identify the speaker, audience, purpose, and genre. Note repeated words and the passage’s movement. Avoid building a message on an isolated phrase.

State the central truth

Write: In this passage, the author teaches the original hearers that… Then identify a faithful application for your congregation. Keep the passage’s meaning distinct from your modern illustration.

Build the message

Opening: name a human concern and introduce the passage. Explanation: show its meaning in context. Main points: use two or three movements from its logic. Application: give concrete responses. Conclusion: return to the central truth and lead prayer.

Sample outline — Serving from Christ's compassion

Read Mark 6:30–44. Explain the apostles’ return, Jesus’ invitation to rest, the crowd, His compassion, and the feeding. Movements: bring your work to Jesus; recognise your limits; serve from His compassion. Show how each movement relates to the narrative.

Review

Does every major claim arise from Scripture? Have I identified interpretation honestly? Are borrowed ideas credited? Are personal stories shared with permission? Does the application encourage faithful action rather than pressure?
